Teaching Experience

Dean's 25+ years of teaching experience ranges from postgraduate supervision through to primary school, and across the arts, sciences and humanities. In addition, he has taught adults returning to education, young offenders looking for a new start, and teachers aiming to hone their subject skills.

  Dean taught for 14 years at the University of Hull in the UK, where he had gained his PhD in 1999. During his time there, he devised and delivered many modules and lectures in a number of departments, including: Drama, The School of Languages and Part-Time Provision: Creative Writing.

  ~ Creative writing for theatre, film, TV and radio.
~ Academic English writing and study skills (for native English speakers and English as a Foreign Language [EFL] students).
~ Audio-visual resource development for language teaching and learning.
~ Postgraduate research supervision and guidance (English and Japanese students).
~ Orientation lectures for 350+ overseas students (largely from Japan, China, South Korea and the UAE).
~ Women in cinema - esp. science fiction film (research specialism).
~ American and British cinema & culture
~ Subtitling techniques.
~ Practical film and theatre skills.
  While researching for his PhD, Dean worked as a Speech and Drama teacher in an independent girls' school. Here he taught A-Level Theatre Studies, Public Speaking and LAMDA Speech examination classes. He also directed and produced annual school productions involving more than 100 students and staff.
Head of Department:
  After completing his PhD, Dean continued as Head of Drama for a further two years, expanding the curriculum to include GCSE Drama, developing the school's links with higher education providers, and delivering his 7th annual theatre production.
  Alongside his work at Hull University, Dean has taught many classes in various learning environments. For 13 years, he was Education Director for his own company, Scene Cinema Ltd., incorporating the Melissi Digital Language Classroom. With these organisations, Dean developed and delivered programmes of study and media training sessions for students and teachers in schools, colleges and universities.

~ Supply teaching, with a focus on English, Maths and Drama.
~ Practical theatre skills to MA students at the University of Essex.

~ Grade school Drama teaching during a gap year in Pittsburgh, PA, USA.
~ Numeracy and literacy skills to young offenders on the UK Department of Justice and ACE Programmes in Hull.
